France ready to provide Algeria Revolution

War archival records to historians by next 2012

El Khabar, 3 may 2008

By next 2012, both Algerian and French historians will have access to the archival records related to the Algerian Revolution, while the period allowed to them has been reduced to 50 years, rather than 60 years. In this regard, the French Government has submitted a bill to Parliament, seeking reducing the limited period allowing historians to have access to archive records concerning the Revolution War, held by the French authorities. According to a statement by the French embassy, the documents related to the defence, classified as “secret” will be included in the bill, which will be discussed by the French Parliament, aiming at providing both French, and Algerian historians valorous documents related to the War of Revolution, and even documents backing to before1948. Such a step came in the aftermath of the French Parliament approval of the draft bill which will be shrunken to 50 years rather than 60, as it is stipulated in the current jurisdiction. But the French Senate has not given its opinion concerning the reducing of the limited duration. Moreover, the statement added that some newspapers concerns arisen recently are not justified, while the bill submitted to the Parliament, has not been yet approved.
